Agrovated Forestry
The Forest Garden system (sometimes called Agro-Forestry) is designed to replicate the layer system found at the edge of 'old growth' forests. At the top is an open canopy, followed by an understory made of different shrub layers, then ground cover and root layer, all interwoven by climbing plants. The system is carefully designed to ensure the balance of nitrogen fixing and dynamic accumulator plants, and is self regulating. A 5600 square meter Forest Garden has been incorporated into FIELDCLUB (but is not part of the FIELDCLUB 'Unit'), partly due to its theoretical resilience against climate change, and its low-maintenance claims. The Forest Garden is designed and positioned to provide its own protection against wind, and to form shelter for the vegetable and fruit gardens. Most species within the forest garden produce fruits or berries. The main structure of the Forest Garden has been planted, and will become established over 20 - 30 years.
